Here's an interesting website that can help you calculate your own energy consumption footprint. Fill out a bunch of questions, and get see the relative impact of each answer.
According to this site, the average American burns the energy equivalent of about 120 one hundred Watt lightbulbs burning continuously.

Ready to have your world view changed, with a video about the statistics of poverty, even though that video is already more than a year old? :-) [ ok, so I'm late to the party on this one. ]
Hans Rosling, demonstrates why policy makers should be thinking about each place in the world with a fine toothed comb.
UPDATE: also a must see... the follow-up talk in 2007.
Pointed out to me by Ernest at AMG Media, it's a video in the venerable TED Series that should be required watching for everyone.
I wish mainstream journalism would take up this method of showing information. Has anyone seen any good examples of statistics-meets-understanding in the mainstream media? Do let me know if anything along those lines pops to mind.
